As JapanConsuming went to press at the beginning of May, we dutifully recorded another Nikkei story outlining a new procurement tie-up between Uny and fellow regional major chain, Izumiya. Such a tie-up, as we noted in JC, makes a lot of sense given that both companies are ripe acquisition targets for the increasingly preditory larger firms, both domestic and foreign but especially domest 2008-05-06 16:59:47 PDT http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1773 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Uny expands tie with Auchan http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1771 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1771 Tue, 06 May 2008 16:54:35 -0700 Japan’s number four GMS chain, Uny, has announced a tie-up with French supermarket giant Auchan to sell European goods in Japan according to Nikkei (Nikkei article). Auchan, which so far has not opened stores in Japan despite operating elsewhere in Asia, has run a wine wholesale business here for some years. Uny will apparently begin buying in a range of wines and chocolates from Auchan, procuring such European merchandise as wines and chocolates in a move that expands an existing relationship. 2008-05-06 16:54:35 PDT http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1771 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Isetan Mitsukoshi’s new Osaka store to have Isetan name http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1769 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1769 Wed, 16 Apr 2008 21:49:23 -0700 As predicted in our April newsletter, there will be some major rebranding in the Mitsukoshi and Isetan portfolio of stores. The newly merged group of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd is to open its department store in Osaka in 2011 under the double branded Mitsukoshi Isetan name, rather than the initially planned Mitsukoshi brand. More significant is the fact that the new store will be managed by JR West Isetan, the joint venture company run by JR and Isetan that currently manages the JR Isetan 2008-04-16 21:49:23 PDT http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1769 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Starbucks going strong in Japan http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1767 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1767 Fri, 04 Apr 2008 23:01:16 -0700 Starbucks is reporting a parent only pretax profit up 33% to ¥6.85 billion for FY2007. Sales of the chain’s new ranges of breakfasts and healthier food options have, apparently, been the main drivers for the increase. This is also the fourth straight year of profit growth and beast the original forecast of a 28% increase. Better than expected prices on materials and lower shipping costs due to increased local sourcing of some supplies all helped with the increase in profit. The machines located inside rail terminals across the Kansai area will bring some excellent locations for new Aeon ATMs as well as provide a further boost to the numbers on its network. The new in-station ATMs will be rolled out in 27 locations across 19 major stations in the Kansai region, with both Kyoto (including four machin 2008-04-01 10:17:23 PDT http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1764 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Aeon to make CFS demands http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1746 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1746 Mon, 03 Mar 2008 21:12:27 -0800 As predicted in JC February, and as vehermently denied by Aeon at the time, Japan’s largest retailer is to make and approach to affiliated drugstore chain CFS to raise its stake from the current 15% to a controlling 33%. This would formalise the affiliation and give Aeon practical control over all CFS operations. In 2007, sales fell 0.5% on a like for like basis, to ¥7.71 trillion according to the Japan Department Store Association (JDSA). Once again, the weather was blamed on the fall, particularly the rain in the first half of the year and the warm weather in the Autumn. As a result, sales of clothing, which usually account for around 40% of a depar 2008-01-21 07:53:56 PST http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1729 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Mixed results in second half http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1727 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1727 Sun, 13 Jan 2008 21:43:50 -0800 Leading Japanese retailers recorded decidedly mixed results for the third quarter of 2007, with the very top players again looking less impressive. Seven & I Holdings (S&I) revised its end of year forecast, warning that the company may report its first drop in profits for six years. Again, as anyone looking around their core GMS business, Ito-Yokado, would fully understand, apparel sales were the main problem, as people continue to find more interest and better bargains at competing sp 2008-01-13 21:43:50 PST http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1727 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Aeon bags JR East shopping buildings http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1707 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1707 Fri, 04 Jan 2008 19:28:02 -0800 Aeon is the biggest operator of shopping space in the country, with 11 million sqm of shopping malls alone. One of its key competitors is JR East, part of the once government owned railway network that, as a privatised company, finds itself owning literally hundreds of high footfall railway terminals ideal for development into commercial shopping buildings. It already has 126 in operation, and is in the ongoing process of building and renovating far more. While it could be argued that take overs of Japanese engineered by the likes of Steel Partners and other investment funds are no less unwelcome in Japan as they are elsewhere, it is equally true that in Japan the target companies are generally long overdue for some kind of major shakeup and such take over inte 2007-12-07 17:16:17 PST http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1706 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets Lawson to vary pricing regionally – maybe http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1668 http://www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1668 Sun, 21 Oct 2007 19:58:04 -0700 Japanese convenience stores are ‘considering’ moves towards regional pricing. Even to long term Japan hands, this new development is something of a surprise and adds further proof that retailers are at last in control of channels – almost. At the same time, it is still amazing that such a change has taken so very long. It would seem that any major, nationwide chain, especially one like Lawson that has around 9,000 stores in total, would naturally vary pricing depending on local conditions, dema 2007-10-21 19:58:04 PDT http://technorati.com/search/www.japanconsuming.com/?p=1668 3 3 JapanConsuming: real insight into Japanese consumer, retail, and luxury goods markets
