DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Featuring Vernetta Walker\, BoardSource \n\n Vernetta Walker\, Director of Consulting and a Senior Governance Consultant for BoardSource in Washington\, DC will be the featured speaker at a statewide Board Development conference at the Oklahoma State University in Tulsa hosted by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits March 12. \n\n Walker will explain what defines an exceptional board and how your board can become one. Drawing on the powerful BoardSource book âThe Source: The Twelve Principles that Power Exceptional Boards\,â the conference will take an in-depth look at each of the principles presented in the book and also focus on how strong boards and strong chief executives make a world of difference in good governance. \n\n Walker frequently delivers training to a variety of nonprofit organizations\, and works with sophisticated organizations in addressing governance issues. She brings a broad depth of knowledge to BoardSource\, having served as director of consulting and contract training and associate general counsel for the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations. \n\n Her expertise includes working with newly formed to complex organizations in the areas of board governance\, nonprofit legal compliance\, organizational structure\, and nonprofit advocacy. \n\n She also practiced law in Orlando\, Florida\, for several years and served as a grant program director for five years at the Florida Bar Foundation. Walker received her J.D. from Washington University School of Law\, St. Louis\, MO\, and her bachelor of arts from the University of Maryland\, College Park\, MD. She is admitted to the Florida and Maryland state bars. \n\n The book and course are meant to spur discussion among chief executives and board members not only about the twelve principles that power exceptional boards but also topics such as: Definition of Responsible versus Exceptional boards\; Increasing your boardâs critical capitalâintellect\, reputation\, resources\, access\; Identifying and maximizing the collective judgment\, wisdom\, and thoughtfulness of your board in pursuit of its mission and vision\; and balancing your roles as an oversight body\, and a force supporting the organization. \n\n The board development conference\, set from 8:30 a.m. â 4:00 p.m.\, will cost $130 for Center members and $150 for non-members.
